Well, a bit of Latin is always good, though I can't speak for Greek. But then the little fuckers will inevitably progress to Nietzsche and it's all ubermensching and "I R Superior And Can Kill Like in Rope" from there.

Well. If you do Latin, you are clearly Superior. You will come into the orbit of other Superior Beings, who will tell you all about the kewl books they read and how they are so grate. In order to maintain conversational ability and credibility with said people, you will read their recommendations, and sooner or later it'll be Brothers Karamazov and deep thinkiness about morality and reason, and Nietsche will inevitably surface at some stage as these people (also known as Clever Boys and The Other Boys who Want To Be Them and also Some Girls) aim to be more and more esoteric and more and more deeply ingrained in modern philosophical wank which nonetheless shores up their ideal personal vision of themselves as superior beings who the rest of humanity simply Do Not Understand. In conclusion, Hitler. Or possibly Emo.

Not that I personally have read this stuff myself, because I am slack and can't be bothered with difficult books unless they have a lot of pictures or have way kewl stories with pretty dresses in them. It is this slackness that prevents me becoming a serial killer. *nods sagely*

See, this is why EVERYONE needs to learn Latin, so there is no hierarchy of superiority. And also so that everyone understands how language works and doesn't put apostrophes and vestigially inflected pronouns in the Do Not Understand basket. *Nods sagely also*

Well, yes, I was thinking some kind of more socialist approach could offset these problems. Except that The Kiddies would probably look down upon their Latin-free parents, and God only knows they're lacking in respect as it is. On the other hand, those of us able to fix them with our steely eye and bellow "vae tibi!" will get Mad Props.

Oh Boris, Boris, your incredibly fascist ideas are more than made up for your charmingly tousled Englishness.

I can just see his line of reasoning - his friends don't knife one another, and they're all Oxbridge educated Latin banterers, so if EVERYBODY was a Sloane ranger, problem solved right? It's just a very English version of claiming unemployed people should all start software companies.

But what I find most amusing is the idea that they can "get knives off the streets". What are people supposed to cut their bread with? [Or is that something they can get the servants to do?]

People cut their bread on the streets? Oh wait, kitchens are in houses, and houses are on streets. Right.

It rather annoys me that there are perfectly good reasons for people in general learning Latin, but instead we get this Boris-logic. Bah.
